Hello, All
As a faithful subscriber/reader of the blog, I've decided to finally make my own post. (As an introduction: I'm a GRDE major, graduating from Samford in less than 6 weeks, know some of ya'll from when I was a freshman/sophomore, had Winslow as my very own professor ::tear::, and Cary, I think I randomly saw you outside of Cool Beans one time, but didn't want you to think of me as a crazy internet stalker, so I didn't say anything)
Anyway, I'm working on my portfolio website and wanted to see what ya'll think:
sometimes you have to reload the page (and I can't figure out why this is a problem). Please let me know feedback/thoughts... hopefully I can work out the last few bugs soon!
Posted by sarah doc at March 29, 2006 08:45 PMwe figured out the problem with this site, so everyone please check it out and give Sarah Dockery some feedback.
Posted by: slo at April 13, 2006 05:55 PMOops, I must've missed this one. Alright, I'll leave a few comments...
• Does the water filling up have any purpose? For instance, does that mean the page is loading?
• I like the childlike quality of the flowers. Pretty nice.
• Take out the home button/flower if you aren't going to have any content on the home page. There's no reason anyone would want to go back to that page.
• Thumbnails are fine, but try and make the large images LARGER. They're so small that they aren't much bigger than the thumbnail. That way, you can take out the zoom in link (on a side note: they're not really zooming in...they're viewing a larger image). There's so much space you could be using on this page, that is currently going to waste. If your issue is K size, I recommend optimizing your jpgs in Photoshop before even importing them into Flash (the save for web option). Photoshop does a much better job than Flash, and it will make your site much smaller in size. You can also use Image Ready if you're more familiar with that program.
• You can try and use the "ease" setting for your transitions to make them move a little more smoothly.
• I think your site would look TONS better if you took out the brown background. Your nav is very fun and free, but is confined to this box. Don't be scared of white space! (I stole your html and swf. and did it myself, and yes it does look a lot better. Very clean and cute.)
On a personal note, that photo of the little girl with the doll scares the shit out of me...I have severe doll-phobia. The girl may be cute, but that doll is just plain creepy.
Posted by: angie at April 19, 2006 09:10 AMgood calls angie, you are the flash queen!
Posted by: slo at April 19, 2006 09:41 AMpardon my ignorance, but can someone explain the ease thing to me? i found it in flash, but don't really understand what to do with it.
thanks for the suggestions :)
Posted by: Sarah Dockrey at April 19, 2006 09:50 PMEasing basically makes motion tweens look a little different. If you have easing set to 100 - also known as EaseOut - the object that you're moving sort of slowing comes to its stopping point (faster in the beginning, slower at the end). If you have easing set to -100 - EaseIn - the object is going to "snap" into its position (slower in the beginning, faster at the end).
However, once you get more advanced, you should probably start using math to move your objects instead of using the tools that come with flash. There are some great "easing equations" out there that look a lot better, and give you more control than what is bulit into Flash.
Hope that helps.
