a spread comparison

this is an example of a battle i lost for the upcoming issue of mental_floss. The first image is the spread as i wanted it, and the second is how it went to press. just wanted to hear other's thoughts

now that i see it and have had some time to let the design sink in a bit, i think what i should have done was probably mimic layout of the text on the sign a bit more and keep the headline more horizontal to keep it a bit more readable. (that was the main concern, that the headline was not legible enough, of course i liked that about it)

i went ahead and made it like a said before

also, the type isn't pink, it should be white, that is some problem in shrinking down the image. (not that there is anything wrong with pink STEPH)

Well, I do agree that the first one isn't legible at all. I didn't even know it was supposed to be until I saw the one below it (kinda like one of those reverse JESUS displays-once you see it the first time, you'll see it again-it's seeing it the first time that's the problem).

But, I'm not a huge fan of the "wave" either. The wave of the text in the photograph isn't so crazy, so maybe it would look fine if it were straightened out a bit.

Did you ever think people would read "North OR Korea"? It's a possibility. Just a thought.

:D LOVE YA!

i kinda liked the illegibleness of the first one for the fact that you think it is another language or something and they you sort of visually decipher it, making it more illustrative than headline, then the first line of text says "DESTINATION: North Korea" so you know what's going on. but that is just my opinion, you know, i don't have a masters degree or anything like that [sticking tongue out and making a disgusted sort of face] [cute smiley thing here]

Definitely the first one...
superior in all ways.
