BOULDERGRASS

a quick post before...
bed, i have spent some time the past two days dabbling in flash and working on my site. during that time i realized that the digital gallery on my site seemed quite horsey(big, bulky) so i redesigned it tonight and used something that i first tried out on the climbing site, something i like to call "JPEG 0" i felt it only appropriate for the digital photos. any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

half frame...soooo sexy.
my sister got a half frame camera (olympus pen ee) for me for Christmas. i have now taken, and developed, and printed* my first roll with this camera.
*i shot it, put it through the developing machine, and ran the machine to make my prints (thank you jeffrey photo lab)
i posted these images at the following url:
www.theordinary.org/halfframe/
also, another note mainly for winslow. at jeffery today i was discussing with lynn (whilst developing my prints mind you) about half frame this and half frame that and how they really only have one half frame customer but his camera was lost in a fire. suffice to say that our conversation ended up being about john thurman. small world. they have known him since liek birth. i digress.
summary:
half frame is hott
i took some
winslow is cool for getting a pen camera first.
here is an example of one of the photos.
cheers

ok, after 6 months..
i have finally put some of my design portfolio on the flash site. woohoo for being on the ball! click here

ok, i dont have anything that exciting to wow you with, but i did put bethany's wedding pics i shot up on my site. so, if youre bored......

GoldKrush Logo
Would you guys mind looking at this logo I did for Matt and myself. There are a few others, but this is the one we liked the best. Let me know what you think. Keep in mind that the "orange" will more likely be a gold color. I was just being lazy.

Hitchin' A Ride
So, who will be going up to Nashville on Friday day/night? I may need to hitch a ride to the...hitchin'. But, I may be going to Quin so I might not need it. Just let me if anyone is. Spanks.
this is just so you guys know.
for those of you not "in the loop" i keep a blog and a livejournal. they arent always exactly the same and sometimes one gets stuff the other doesnt but this is mainly relevant because i post images there all the time now, now that i have a scanner that will do transparencies. (its just like winslow's. im creepy like that)
the blog, for now*, is at this url.
www.theordinary.org/blogger.html
the livejournal is here:
livejournal.com/users/theordinaryorg/
so...for you boring days at work with your real jobs...you can go to those places and maybe see new things that have a chance of being fun to look at.
currently the only thing you can comment on is the livejournal, so if you are into commenting..go there i guess.
cheers
cary
*winslow...this does mean i am sort of working on the mt version. slowly.

"be careful his bowtie is really a camera"
hey check this site out that i made for this comedian. props to winslow for giving me the code to make a fixed window popup from flash.
i was thinking about screwing all the pages and making it one html page with show/hide layers so that the images don't have issues loading between pages cos it'll load all at once. let me know what you think.

oh and i was wondering if any of you have any ideas where i could make it so that my client could update his own shows page. like by incorporating a blog or soemthing that would make it easy for him. so that i can detatch :)

for your viewing and critiqueing enjoyment
the text isn't quite finished. but, anyways...
dance monkey dance
See the cool stuff i get to work on. This is actually one of the better jobs. It is 84"x39", the white box is where a plasma screen is set in to view a video clip. This was for the chicago auto show in.... chicago

a website project
these are comps of a website i am doing. real simple, kinda playfull... where the photo is on the inside page i think is going to be a flash movie that plays a movie of photos. but i am not sure yet.
i finally finished a roll of film from...
christmas today. and it turned out i had some interesting some on it, Like This. It is a stip of half-frame film from the EES documenting the drive to the thrift store in midfield. i think when you scroll thru it it feels almost like you are looking out the window watch the stuff go by.
also, an intersting note, it seems that Internet Explorer cannot handle files larger than 4000px wide, because it was cutting this image off originally and i had to go back and resize.
don't get me wrong, i don't think that these photos (when viewed individually) are anything of note, but as a series i really like them.

a lil' design
I did design a lil' design for my wedding. so i am not a complete slacker
I also got this printed at kinko's. B/W, my own paper, 200 copies, cut to fit 5x7, all for $13 dollars. It is also probably one of the best designs EVER. kidding
Lifetime Movies
so i was watching lifetime, and it was a movie about a graphic designer and a boy who wanted to be a designer. Here's the story...So this woman moved from New York (of course) to her small hometown in the country because her mom died (of course) and she had to take care of her mother's belongings.....well she and the wannabe designer boy hook it up because of their "connection" with one another. Well the boy is her old bestfriends SON, that she knew as a baby!!
This was probably the most disgusting lifetime movie i have ever seen!! Not only because this woman look like she was in her 40's and he looked all of 12, but also by the way they talked about thier work....oh SNAP! I couldn't bear to watch the end, it was soo gross. ....He was so "drawn in" by light of the world..... And she came up with her CD designs by meditating on the CD's inner calmness....and then they start making out. EWWWWW! Where to they come up with this crap for crap.
I just wanted to share my disgusting experiance with lifetime and their attempt to dramatize the world of graphic design. Sometimes over dramatizions are funny...like the time that girl in drawing class was talking about the Bambo sticks and how they represented life...that was funny. i still laugh about that...haha haha...HA. but THIS was just bad in every way.
I may never watch lifetime again...well unless Tori Spelledtinin..in..in (however you spell it) is on. Oh man she is the best actress EVER
Dearest Steph....
I'm am replying to your queries.
a) I'm not sure if this is where i thought i would be. Graduating and the real world made me nervous and kwee-z (i dont know how to spell that, so i spelled it phonetically, i hope thats okay with everyone) so i didnt think about it too much. I guess when i did think about it, i imagined myself in a cool place doing cool stuff with cool people. Needless to say, as we got closer to graduation this idea faded a bit. not because i didnt think i could do it, well that might have been part of it, but i think it really just got pushed back furthur down the timeline for a number of reasons.
b) I am very happy where I'm at. I love that I have my own schedule and can choose what work i want and what i dont want. I love that I can go to tennessee for a week and work. I think that deciding to do freelance was not only a step of faith for me but a good transition for me coming out of school. I'm learning self-discipline and self-control and how to have my own little business. I also think i would have died going straight into the 9 to 5. i cant handle that jazz. but its looking more and more appealing. so we'll see. actually a steady salary and benefits is whats looking more appealing. :-)
c) I only wish that i was doing this with my fellow classmates, thats all.
d) I definitely question myself. thats probably bad, huh? But i would say from the help of loving people around me i dont really do that much anymore. except when im working on something and i all my solutions suck....but im realizing thats part of the process.
e) I dont think this is a gay thang. and i love that you typed out "you'ens". that made my day.
f) i dont know any good photographers by name. i suck at stuff like that.
im sorry ive typed a lot
so im in between projects. i have nothing to post....except...i did do a litle art project yesterday.....

also because...
steph isn't doing it for some reason, i am going to post some of her questions that were in the comments section into this entry:
I want to hear other people thoughts on design and where they thought they would be after school
are you happy?
Do you wish you were somewhere else (meaning in progression of your career)?
Do you ever question yourself as a designer
I want to know how you'ens feel about these things, if you think its gay, you can tell me. Ill blame it on all the gayness at my work.....so......ya, ok cant wait to hear all the GREAT meaningful answers

cary the lomo man...
and you should go and look at his new lomos HERE because they are beautiful. come to think about it, it is time for a rant! lately i have been very down on the lomo scene (mainly because lomography.com is a rediculous money grabbing spam mailing self-promoting machine) because i feel like there are a lot of photos that are just of something that is degraded (dirty, falling apart, old) centered in the middle of the frame with the "lomo vignette" (did i spell that right?) or it is "shot from the hip" and just doesn't really have anything to offer as far as composition goes and it is called a "lomograph" and is cool! now i am not saying that i haven't been guilty of being sucked into this, because i have, but i think i am out of it now. so what am i saying? i am saying that cary's photos have something more to offer, the offer great compositions with the spontaneity of a point and shoot camera, beautiful juxtapositions of texture, and a great general feeling of cary's trip and what he did. what could be better than that, great photographs that still serve the purpose of recording a road trip? and if i here anyone use "lomograph" i am going to have you blocked from this site!
