why do i even try...

to go backpacking with john thurman? i mean really, get this, i think that he and i have probably been on maybe 4/16 hikes that have gone off without a hitch. here is how the record stands:

1. backpacking trip to mount sterling, NC - constant rain, and a thunderstorm on top of a mountain, and almost got bit by a rattlesnake.

2. backpacking trip from newfound gap to cosby, tn , GSMNP, january - snowfall the night before closes road, and delays the start of the hike by 4 hours causing a replaning of trip from a 3 day to a overnight trip to mt. leconte.

3. day hike to mt. cammerer, tn, GSMNP, day after thanksgiving, while driving to go to the hike at 7am the morning after thanksgiving with no one on the road, get speeding ticket driving through downtown knoxville. (sidenote: my highschool art teacher received a ticket from the same guy around the same time and was in court with me) anyways

4. day hike to mt. leconte, john manages to wreck his car on the way to school that morning, didn't cause cancelation, but did cause a slight delay on the already rushed afternoon hike.

5. AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE, hike the AT in one summer, my knee goes out on the 1st day, and i have to stop by the 3rd day, he continued on without me and finished in 89 days, i sat at home depressed for a month, and then tried multiple times to get out and hike again with other problems stopping me, such as having a bear break into a shelter and steal my backpack, rip it apart, and eat all my food. (are you seeing a pattern here?)

6. AND THIS IS THE LATEST ONE, john and i plan an overnight hike to mt. leconte for tomorrow, so we can hang out since we hardly get to anymore, and his apartment burns down this morning, taking with it all his clothes and shoes and basic hiking accessories with it.

i can't explain it! but it is really sad, and it is awful that his apartment burned, he lost lots of negatives and slides and photos and stuff with it. that is one of my worst fears, i mean, that stuff is completely unreplaceable, it makes me really want to back my stuff up better and put it somewhere else just so that i can have it, or at least get some kind of fireproof/resistant filing cabinet or something.

one more thing, for all you grapic designerds out there, the new Alexey Brodovitch book is very very choice!

and a merry christmas to cary and brandon who both texted me on christmas day.

cary has updated his site...

but not with moveable type, not yet at least. but for those of you who haven't had the pleasure (and believe me it is pleasurable) of looking through his 15000 pictures from iraq, he has put a select few up on his site for public viewing.
one of my favorites
so go check it out.
the whole gallery
there are also pictures of president bush and billary, maybe rumsfeld will show up soon too.

woohoo!

cary norton is the man, well maybe, it seems that his help combined with my refreshed efforts have saved this blog from eminent death by PC. You will note that the scrollbar is gone from the bottom of the blog (of course if you were using a mac you are asking, "what scrollbar, there was never any scrollbar there." no my friends there wasn't, it seems that even microsoft programs work better on a mac).

December 21, 2003

so even after...

complaining about how many photos cary probably took, i did get to see them yesterday. and i must say that iraq really reminds me of mexico! and cary was working in the middle of NOWHERE! he got alot of great portrait shots which he hopes to make a book (read:photo album) out of, but who knows maybe someone will pic it up as a book! that would rock! it would seem that lack of sleep and travel have made me tired. time for bed

but one more note, anybody with any helpful advice on why pc's want to put a horizontal scroll bar on this blog on this frame and macs don't, please help a brotha out!

CARY is home again. its good to have him back. and i have a feeling i will be seeing him tomorrow. i for one am glad that his trip was safe and he stayed safe during his whole trip to iraq. i just can't wait for him to show up with 30 rolls of film and 200 cds of digital pics to look through! yeah! i can't wait! [sigh] anybody catching the sarcasm there? well, you shouldn't be, because i am serious! i am never sarcastic!

December 16, 2003

ok ok ok

today i finally came to the realization that it would be soooo much easier to just go ahead and put the blog on the intro page rather than having it on both the html and flash pages separately, mainly because i seem to update the different sites separately, and flash is not very compatible with moveable type (at least with the small amount of backend programming stuff i know at this point). so from now on the blog will be here.

new design?

what do you think? do you miss the gas station? tell me your thoughts...

Posted by winslow at 11:51 AM | Comments (4)

so what's the deal with backwash?

i mean, you aren't washing your back!?

sorry about that.
the real question is one that was brought up in a discussion between claire and my neighbor danielle. and it is: why do people think that when they are drinking a drink that backwash is getting into it everytime they drink, and even if that is the case why do they think that it is going to the bottom and that is why they can't drink the last part of the drink? i want your insights.

well look at this...

i finally (after about 5 months) got Moveable Type working on my site. So i am no longer a slave to the "blogger machine." and there is a good (easy) way to comment on my posts. WOOHOO COMMENTS ON THE POSTS!

Just so that my blog wasn't empty, i went ahead and moved my posts from the old blogger pages over to this one. so you can see back to OCT. maybe i will figure a way to implement all the other ones sometime too.

so well, cary, there you go, i did it, its done.

if rock climbing interests

if rock climbing interests you, you will enjoy and understand the next paragraph, if not, just skip down...
well the final triple crown competition happened this weekend at horsepens 40. the temps were awesome and the rock was dry, perfect for some sick sends. lots of hard stuff went down. and in the end Andrew Trailer came out on top of the guys standings and Anna Burgos won the womens. Second place for the guys was Jeremy Watson and third went to Matt Bosley, but Bosley did place first overall in the whole Triple Crown standings. i shot quite i few pictures and hopefully i will have those up by the end of the week. i personally didn't climb much at the comp, seeing as how i was supposed to be "judging" and area, but after a while i just had to go and get my shoes and try some problems. no real sends of note, just some repeats and some v4/5's that i hadn't really seen until there were little pieces of paper marking them. so basically i really didn't get in enough climbing on saturday, which necessitated a trip out to the boulderfields today. i finally steered away from reignition for a session to see i would have more luck on some other problems and sure enough, i had some great luck with hoop dreams although i have a feeling i didn't do the right top out, either way, i will get it soon. after i did that, i noticed that i had a small hole in my finger tip that was bleeding so i called it quits. it was wierd i never felt any pain or thinness in my tips and then, BLOOD. oh well, it isn't serious. i guess some little pebble just got me. well i think that is enough of that. if you wanna tell me the right beta for the hoop dreams top out just click "comment here" below and post it in the rock climbing forum.

so besides that, well i didn't do to much this weekend or since my last post, i did however shoot quite a bit of film this weekend and will hopefully be getting it developed tomorrow. so maybe some new stuff will be up later this week.

question:
are there any other coffee drinkers out there that sometimes, even after drinking coffee in the morning, just don't quite feel like their heads are out of the fog for quite a while into the day, does this have to do with coffee, sugar, or what? let me know

so, thanksgiving has come and

so, thanksgiving has come and gone, and i am none the fatter for it. but just in case, i went to the boulderfields today to burn some of it off and sent reignition again (for the first time this year). so i went home to knoxville for the weekend to take care of business and what not. and by what not i mean building a bookcase. i think it turned out pretty cool, although i really didn't have enough time to perfect it. but i have posted pictures of it anyways because it is still pretty cool. so you can see it here. look at me, two blogs at relatively short intervals, i must be on a roll.

one more thing of note. it looks like i will be doing some work for mental floss magazine. yeah for me.
